Runners in this year’s Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k might find themselves dog tired after race day but it will be for a good cause.

Their strenuous efforts on Sunday, April 22, 2018 will help collar cash for the unsung heroes of the hills – and their canine companions.

Alongside the two Balfron schools, Lomond Mountain Rescue Team, one of the busiest mountain rescue teams in Scotland, is to be the charity beneficiary of the Stirlingshire village race. Its voluntary teams, helped by search dogs, assist walkers, runners, cyclists and holidaymakers who find themselves in difficulties in the region.

Now in its 12th year, the MBM Balfron 10k has raised more than £70k for the village’s primary and high schools and nominated charities since it began.

With a reputation as a tough but rewarding test thanks to its undulating route along scenic country roads overlooked by the Campsie Hills, the event attracts club runners, locals, first-time 10k-ers and veterans who return time and again to experience its community spirit.

Last year race organisers altered the route to take in more of the village centre itself – a move which will be repeated in 2018.

Race director Nigel Johnson said: “The Lomond Mountain Rescue Team volunteers provide an unparalleled service 24 hour a day, 365 days of the year, right on our doorstep. We are pleased to assist them in their unstinting efforts in helping those in need out on the mountains and great outdoors in our area.’’

Nigel added: “Once again we are delighted to be supported by Mairi Clark of Mulberry Bush Montessori as the main sponsor of the Balfron 10k.”

The race, which starts at Balfron Campus at 11am, features an officially measured course, chip-timing, winners’ prizes plus goody bags including commemorative medal and T-shirt. Entries for the 2018 event are now open, visit www.balfron10k.org.uk
