BBC sports presenters commit to Balfron 10k

BBC Scotland sports presenters Rhona McLeod and John Beattie will swap their microphones for running shoes, for one day only, to run the Co-operative Balfron 10K road race on Sunday, April 27.

Rhona was the celebrity commentator at Balfron’s first 10K last year and was so impressed with the spirit of the community event that she decided to enter the race in 2008.

“Last year I was helping at the Balfron 10K which was great fun, but I was jealous of all those taking part,” said Rhona.

“The atmosphere was great as more than 600 runners lined up in anticipation of one of the most beautiful courses in the country. The consensus was that it was tough, but a fabulous 10K.”

She added: “The race is so completely different to any other I have encountered — I’ll definitely be on the starting line this year.”

Meanwhile her colleague, former Scotland rugby international John Beattie has decided to keep Rhona company.

Colin Mendham, chairman of the Co-operative Balfron 10K, said: “ We are thrilled that both Rhona and John are running the 10K. Last year was a huge success for us and we intend to make it even bigger and better this year.

“With the generosity of the Co-operative we have been able to introduce a chip and timing device — an electronic transmitter attached to each runner’s leg to ensure finishing times are recorded quickly and efficiently.

“We already have more than 300 entries and are well on target of attracting more than 700 runners for the event.

“I would ask anyone who wants to run this popular 10K to enter online now at www.balfron10k.org.uk.”

Starting from Balfron Campus at 11am on April 27, The Co-operative Balfron 10K road race will follow a scenic route heading out towards Fintry. The Co-operative is the main sponsor of the event with supporting local sponsors including the Mulberry Bush Montessori Ltd, Speedy Generators, Careth Landscaping, Balfron Campus, Graham’s Family Dairy, Jewsons and many more smaller local businesses.

All funds raised from the race are being shared between Balfron Primary School and Balfron High School.
